In the July 10, 2017, issue of the Register-Guard, Eugene resident Joel Deese writes in a letter:
I was happy to see Mayor Lucy Vinis acknowledge the citizens’ initiative for an independent public auditor, modeled on Portland’s elected auditor system, which is widely considered a success.
However, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated by Vinis wanting to reinvent the wheel by forming a committee of stakeholders to re-examine what the well-thought-out ballot initiative has already laid out for us. Eugeneans are coming to see “stakeholders” as code for “city insiders.” The voters deserve a transparent explanation of exactly what Vinis doesn’t like about the citizens’ proposal. …
