Auditor wise if no rubber-stamper

In the August 19, 2017, issue of the Register-Guard, Eugene resident Judith Schoap writes in a letter:

Ruth Atcherson (“City auditor a waste of money,” Aug. 15) seems stunningly ill-informed about the ballot measure seeking to provide Eugene with much-needed oversight and accountability via an elected independent auditor.

She fears an auditor who “potentially knows nothing about auditing,” although the ballot measure specifically requires auditor candidates to possess certification as a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Public Accountant or Certified Government Auditing Professional and have at least five years of experience in the field. The proposed auditor will also be subject to peer review consistent with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards.
