City councilors consider how to respond to auditor proposal

In the November 21, 2017, issue of the Register-Guard, reporter Christian Hill writes:

Eugene city councilors had their first public discussion as a group Monday about a measure on the May ballot that would create an independent, elected city auditor’s office.

They made no decision but asked city staff after a discussion that lasted more than 90 minutes to bring back more information to continue the discussion.

City councilors could decide to support or oppose Measure 20-283, which is an amendment to the city charter; take no stance; or place a competing measure on the same ballot.

They also heard from a group convened by the mayor to gather information about the authority and operation of auditor’s offices in other U.S. cities. …
