2018: Reading the tea leaves — Local: A city auditor, a city hall and a courthouse?

In the December 31, 2017, issue of the Register-Guard, reporters Christian Hill and Elon Glucklich write:

Observers of Eugene politics will have plenty to focus on in 2018. …

They’ll also have Measure 20-283, the proposal on the May ballot that would create the office of an independent elected city auditor. A local group, City Accountability, qualified the measure for the May ballot in October after gathering signatures.

Backers say the office is needed as a check on city spending and operations and to root out waste and fraud.

Critics of the measure fear that it will cost too much and there would be scant oversight of the new office, given that it would not be overseen by the City Council or city manager. …
