4-3 vote opens door to competing city auditor measures on May ballot in Eugene

The Eugene City Council vote 4-3 to schedule a discussion about placing a competing measure authorizing a city auditor on the May ballot.

A ballot measure creating an auditor is already up for a vote on the May 2018 ballot.

“The City Auditor will have the statutory authority to audit every aspect of city government and report objectively and directly to the taxpayers about all aspects of government regarding their stewardship of public funds,” according to City Accountability, the petitioners who gathered signatures to place the measure on the ballot.

But this week a group calling itself Citizens for Sensible Oversight asked the City to consider an alternative proposal. The group includes former Mayor Kitty Piercy; Julie Daniel, the retired director of BRING; Phil Carrasco with Oregon AFL-CIO; and others.

The Council voted 4-3 to discuss the proposal from the group. Mike Clark, Betty Taylor and Emily Semple cast the dissenting votes. George Evans was not present.
