Debate over city auditor heats up: The mayor and organizers behind a ballot initiative have differing ideas

Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis wants to open talks about bringing aboard a city performance auditor.

But a backer of a proposed ballot initiative to create an independently elected office to scrutinize city activities and spending counters that the mayor’s real aim is to undermine that effort.

The dueling proposals, intended to improve transparency and build trust in city government, heat up the fledgling debate over the city auditor, a topic sure to dominate city politics well into the coming year.

Vinis’ support for a performance auditor comes as backers of the proposed initiative are on the cusp of beginning to gather signatures to qualify it for the ballot. …
