Three Eugene residents, including two former city councilors, are seeking to qualify for a future ballot a measure that would create an independently elected city auditor as a check on city government spending and operations.
The three chief petitioners, including former Ward 1 City Councilors George Brown and Bonny Bettman McCornack, plan to file a revised proposed initiative soon after withdrawing their initial petition Thursday.
The proposed initiative, with voter approval, would amend the city charter to create an Office of the Independent Auditor. The office would be run by a full-time auditor elected to four-year terms and his or her staff, and it would operate separately from the City Council and city manager.
The auditor would conduct financial, performance and other audits of all city operations and activities. …
